Historical Restoration

One of the most important restoration projects for our studio was "The Good Knight" which was commissioned to John LaFarge in 1902 by the First Unitarian Church in Detroit.

John LaFarge was credited with inventing opalescent glass and is considered one of the great masters of stained glass. The5 foot wide and 15 foot tall window was removed in the late 1950's and was stored in the church basement.

In 1995 the window was purchased, and shipped to our studio for complete restoration. This process requires an extremely delicate removal of areas of the window that are layered. The layering, referred to as plating was used by LaFarge to create depth and color diversity. The multi-layered sections have to be cleaned in between the pieces, and reassembled.

When considering restoring the windows in your church that are weathered, worn, cracked, bulging, or broken, you should evaluate the history of your glass. From the most intricate design, to the simplest, the windows in your church deserve the best possible care and restoration techniques available. At Salem Stained Glass, Inc. we approach each project with the same dedication to quality.

We will be happy to assist you in evaluating the extent of damage to your windows, as well as providing some guidance and understanding of the steps necessary to restore your windows to their original beauty.

Call or write for a visit to your facility, to evaluate your project.

Before

Salem Stained Glass was comissioned in 2004 to restore this window that had been created by the Franz Mayer Studio of Munich in 1911, and installed in St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC.
Several cracked pieces were removed, glued with conservator's epoxy, and reinstalled. Missing pieces were replaced by matching the glass, painting them in the same style, and leading them into the panels. Decades of soot and grime were carefully washed away using conservation detergent.
The window is now installed in a private home in Lake Waccamaw, NC.
