Story #1
About five years ago, one of our sales reps
picked up on the possibility of a 42-window stained glass project. The prospect
had interviewed other stained glass studios and claimed that he "hasn't
seen anything impressive yet." So we set a meeting, during which the
man asked probing question after probing question to see how much we knew
(he was a retired two-star Air Force general and clearly was accustomed to
studying a subject in detail before making up his mind). Evidently, we passed
his test, because he then asked to see our samples. We sat on a wall outside
his office and flipped through Salem's portfolio of images. "Wait!"
he exclaimed. The window that caught his eye was of Christ speaking to a group
of children, surrounded by flowers and birds.
"That's it!" he decided on the spot. "That's what I want."
He was impressed with our ability to create original art featuring children
and to create stories in stained glass suited to the chapel at the Lake Waccamaw
Boys and Girls Home, near Whiteville, North Carolina. A year and a half later,
the job was complete, and needless to say, the general is very pleased --
so much so that he introduced us to the notable stained glass artist Rowan
LeCompte, who designed a 12-foot diameter rose window for the chapel and worked
with us on its fabrication and installation.
But there's more to the story. Some of the faces in the windows are of the general's grandchildren, permanent testament to his love for them ... and his faith in us.
